Neighborhood Holiday Events Round Up
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in our beautiful city! We might not have the climate of a winter wonderland, but if you’re looking for traditional celebrations or modern, seasonal-themed light shows — downtown San Diego is home to a variety of holiday events that everyone in the neighborhood can take part in to spread holiday cheer. From the Little Italy Tree Lighting to the Parade of Lights on the San Diego Bay, here are just a few of the holiday celebrations happening in our city this year:
On Saturday, Dec. 7 from 4 to 8 p.m., the Little Italy Association will kick off this year’s seasonal festivities with the reveal of a brand new, custom-designed Christmas tree that will change colors based on your perspective of it, located in the center of the Piazza Basilone. India Street will be completely decked out with 10-foot tall nutcrackers on every street corner and lit up with sparkling white lights that will run along the sides of the street. There will be a Christmas Village where you can shop for holiday goodies from seasonal vendors and select vendors from the Little Italy Mercato, and Santa will be stopping by for some holiday fun around 6 p.m. You don’t want to miss out on this enchanting evening just steps from your home!
Mark your calendars because on Dec. 6 from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Dec. 7 from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m., Balboa Park’s December Nights returns for its 42nd year of festive fun for the whole family! This year, the beloved, annual holiday event is expected to draw in more than 350,000 attendees for live music, arts and crafts, photos with Santa Claus, activities, drinks and food from across the globe and, of course, lots of twinkling holiday lights. Select museums in the park will offer free admission during the event, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., on both days, too.
From Dec. 13, 2019 to Jan. 5, 2020, the San Diego Zoo’s annual holiday-themed event, Jungle Bells, will return for another year of twinkling lights, merry-making performances and festive food! Presented by California Coast Credit Union, the month-long event will feature live music and entertainment at the zoo, along with unforgettable animal experiences, seasonal decorations throughout the zoo, a visit from Santa Claus and some tasty treats.
On Dec. 8 and Dec. 15, over 100,000 residents and visitors are expected to crowd on the shoreline to watch more than 80 extravagantly decorated boats sail along downtown’s waterfront for the 48th annual Parade of Lights! Members and participants of the highly anticipated holiday parade by the bayfront will decorate their boats to fit this year’s theme, “Comic-Con on the Bay”. For the 4th time, the parade will proceed to the pier at Cesar Chavez Park before making the turn to Coronado, giving spectators another area to view the parade. It has become one of the most iconic holiday events in San Diego, so get there early because you don’t want to miss it!
